Babu Ji NYC

“The Hindi term Babu Ji, when used playfully is what we New Yorkers might call the mayor of the block.”

Babu Ji New York (2015)

Babu Ji you did not disappoint!  Since moving from London to New York, I have been on the search for great Indian Food (London has lots of brilliant Indian food spots). After seeing Babu ji trending on social media, I booked a table for two (tasting menu $50 each) during my Birthday week.

I have to say Babu Ji is one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve been to in Manhattan. The chef is from Australia.  He and his lovely team serve the freshest, most tasty Indian dishes.

We arrived early and were seated promptly. We were given water in steel glasses (proper Indian style). We were then asked our choice of wine (they only serve wine and beer) and if we had any dietary requirements. After that the delicious food began to flow!

What impressed me the most, was with each round of food, the chef came out to explain exactly what it was, where it originated from, what the ingredients were and how we should eat it! Here is some of the mouth-watering food we ate!

Gol GappaA most favorite Indian street snack enjoyed by millions of Indians everyday…tangy, spicy, sweet & surprising” – a delightful little explosion of flavors.

Papadi Chaat The motherland’s chickpea, cucumber, pomegranate, tamarind, mint & yogurt chutney version of nachos & salsa. A must try.”

We were also served a hot cheese Indian patti and Chinese style tasty cauliflower. This is making me hungry again!

Finally, a main course was a full thali (big steel plate) of curries, rice and nan. This was simply a plate full of little pockets of paradise.  It was a plate of heaven and I enjoyed every second of it. We were also lucky enough to see  on our visit.

To finish we were given Kulfi (Indian ice-cream) – very yummy! This helped settle all the different spices. It was just a wonderful eating experience, slightly marred by the tragic fact that I couldn’t finish all my food – my belly was about to explode!

It was truly a great eating experience. I shall be dragging everyone I know here for a little taste of India! Cheers to you Babu ji!

Hi there, my name is Deepa Makwana and if you hadn’t guessed already, I LOVE all things food, travel and lifestyle. Since moving from London to New York, I have been wanting to write about my recipes and travel however I was a little afraid to share! But as my mother always says ‘if you don’t try, you will never know’. So I have finally decided to create my own little outlet on anything and everything involving things like where to eat, travels, home recipes, my fav home products or even the best shows I am watching! If I can help in any way – I have achieved my goal! Come on in and have a peak! DeepsMak x
